Print Formatting

Yay! It's my book! In my hand!

It’s no secret that the majority of books sold for self-published authors is eBooks. But I’ve found that I sell print books, too and I make more money from each print book sold.  Some readers are resistant to eReaders. And I don’t know about you, but I like to hold my book in my hand.

But there’s more to taking a .doc or .docx document and making it fit into a print book. You have to consider margins, gutters, orphans and widows. Title page and chapter heading layout. Do you want the author name and title on the pages? Centered or anchored to the sides? Where do you put page numbers? These aren’t in surmountable decisions, nor are they necessarily difficult to implement, but they take time. HOURS. And maybe I’m weird, (Okay, I am) but I actually enjoy formatting print books. I like the creativity of making the book look as professional as possible.

Chosen Title page

But not everyone else does.

I recently had a fellow author friend ask me to format her print book. She had checked into several other sites and said that my books looked better than the services they offered. Without hesitation, I accepted.

Now I’ve decided to offer this service to others. Writing will be my main priority, but I will offer print formatting on a limited basis. What I will provide:

  • Format your book following similar formatting of books in your genre.
  • Text of your book converted to Garamond, the standard font used for text. (Titles, chapter headings will received specialized fonts)
  • Creation of your own unique title pages and chapter headings appropriate for your book and genre.
  • Convert your manuscript  to the book size that you choose.
  • Create headers with your author name and book title. I will make sure they are not on the opening title and dedication page, chapter headings and acknowledgments or About the Author page in the back to give your book an “industry” look.
  • Page numbers either in header or at the bottom of the page. Decorative details can be added.
  • Decorative section divider characters
  • Decorative first word or line at beginning of each chapter (if you choose)
  • Elimination of orphan lines at the end of a chapter (ex: a chapter end with two lines on a single page)
  • I scan the entire document MULTIPLE times at several different phases of the process to correct formatting issues.
  • A Photobucket set up for your project that is password protected so you can see pages and give approval and feedback.
  • Completion within two to three days of starting project depending on changes needed and time between feedback.
  • I will send you a .doc and a PDF file of your manuscript.

Won’t I don’t do:

  • Proof read
  • Change your writing in anyway other than to change formatting.
  • Create your cover

Pricing:

Manuscript up to 60,000 words, up to twenty chapters: $75
Manuscript between 61,000 and 100,000 words, up to thirty chapters: $100
Manuscripts more than 100,000 words: $25 for each additional 25K
Each additional chapter: $3
Changes needed after completion: $10 if minor or FREE if an issue arises in the proof review

Weird glitchy formatting issues encountered in your document: Price will be determined depending on work needed. An example of this is a document that has been formatted with tab indentations instead of indent set up in Paragraph in Word. Each line has to be fixed paragraph by paragraph. I will fix a small percentage of these because formatting glitches are inevitable. But if the work is extremely time intensive, an additional fee will be charged, pending client approval.
